Ivan and Varatchaya Benseman say they would like to see Ōpōtiki District Council upgrade a ford on Motu Rd after their vehicle was irreparably damaged while crossing recently.

The couple live on Whitikau Rd, past Toatoa, and say their recently purchased Mitsubishi Outlander electric hybrid was written off by their insurance company after the battery was flooded from trying to cross the Papamoa Stream ford in September.

They say they have given up on the idea of an electric or hybrid vehicle. They had only owned the Outlander for four months . He said he paid $37,000 for the vehicle and it would have cost $42,000 for it to be put back together, with no guarantee it would work.

Varatchaya said they had now bought an older Nissan petrol vehicle which cost more to run but she felt was better suited to fording streams.

He feels the solution is to line the ford with concrete as done with fords in the Gisborne and Thames-Coromandel districts. However, he has not contacted the council about the latest incident.

1489321 2022-11-17 22:44:00 Have to say, why do people think any car can drive through rivers ok? I wouldn't even in a petrol one. They're not boats. piroska (17583)

Plenty of car repair youtube vids showing where engines were destroyed from water getting in them while running, requiring a rebuild .
Add to that the vast number of sensors and wiring under the car and around the engine .

Modern cars arnt 1950's landrovers :)

1489324 2022-11-18 05:44:00 My old Escort used to drop down to 3 cylinders simply after sitting in rain for half a day. Fine once warmed up, but a total piece of #### when cold. Sooo glad to have kissed goodbye to carbeuraters (spelling?).
I once got asked to do a home visit to a client who lived wayyy out in the sticks.... so said POS car loaded with gear, following his written guide to finding their place... "after crossing stream... " - oh ****, he meant after driving through the stream, not crossing a bridge!

Turns out he was capable of coming into town for his exam, just didn't want to be arsed. Needless to say he got a "No" when he asked me to repeat the visit again at a later time.

1489325 2022-11-18 08:16:00 I think the mistake is thinking an SUV, hybrid or otherwise, is suitable for proper offroading, unfortunately being 4WD leads people to expect more from them than they are designed for. River fords are often shallow and easily traversed by any vehicle most of the time but when the river rises you need a vehicle more capable. There wasn't the same level of news raised for the car they damaged there in July according to the article. Neither vehicle was a great choice for river fords IMO and someone who's lived there for 50 years might have figured that out sooner.

If they kill their Nissan Patrol there next will it be in the news again?
