I go out of my way to avoid anything like a Chromecast, though. I don't like the restrictions and the privacy concerns.

I've used a Jail-broken PS3, or my laptop as a media player on TV, but now have a dedicated HTPC which is even better, because it runs desktop Linux and I can do anything I like with it. Like install ad-blockers, play games and even use it for Zoom etc.

I don't care about privacy concerns. What is there to worry about? And what sort of restrictions? I am not aware of any restrictions.

Are you sure you don't care about privacy? Would you be OK with me installing a camera in your house so I can watch everything you do?

I don't believe you can install adblock on a Chromecast. Nor can you do a lot of other things with it.
A desktop PC is much more versatile.

1489589 2022-12-11 21:11:00 We don't have a Chromecast but have 2 Apple tv. I sent back one of our Sky boxes and use the Apple to download all TV. All that is missing is Sky Sport which is why I have kept the other Sky box. Richard (739)

If it's just sport you can get the skysportnow app on apple tv.
If however you want everything else, then you have to keep a sky subsription and use airplay to get it to the apple tv, but then, if you're paying for a subscription you'd have their decoder

Not a great user experience though. ie for a family. Better if you're running kodi or something like that, and have a remote for the computer. But logging in to sites is a pain, and using a mouse and keyboard is just annoying for entertainment.

Huh. I use a mouse and keyboard on mine and find it the opposite, especially if I play any games.

And thats why I said: Not a great user experience though. ie for a family

For a single person, have at it. But a family situation, or with visitors, expecting them to watch tv via a keyboard and mouse, just wont work.
