Language is a means of sharing knowledge and understanding without which we'd largely living in caves or structures made crudely or simply out of natural materials, living short lives and accepting whatever temperature nature delivered. S9iince greeting rituals and imploring blessings from invisible friends on the occasion of commencing, or restarting (non-primitive) projects these rituals can be compared with giving a child a toy or other distraction to pacify them when things outside their understanding occur. It doesn't matter to anyone else how the child treats their pacifier, it is theirs exclusively and has no real effect on others. Its job is purely to give the child something they are happy with and keeps them occupied. If the child insists that others suck their dummy or chew their doll, it is best if they're gently redirected. Similarly, if religion or official languages are allowed to interfere with normal life then gentle redirection of the dispensers is advised. The powhiri or the sermon don't need to be understood, there's no useful meaning or message or information to be conveyed. if everybody else is compelled to chew a pacifier or doll, the whole project starts to become childish and thus irrelevant. Better if adult observers offended by the sight or sound of the dummy just switch to reading a book or taking a stroll outside until the distraction is over. Most of these opening or dedication rituals will not lose their effectiveness whatever language is chosen, Latin or Esperanto would serve just as well as ancient Greek or phonetic Wingdings. If there is nothing in the message, it doesn't matter what it's wrapped in. The time taken with all the folderol is, sadly, irreplaceable. Observing a child busily chomping on a pacifier may be offensive to some, but if the alternative is screaming children then ignoring or avoiding the ritual may be the best way out and it avoids offending the child's parents who think the performance is normal and acceptable. You make lots of sense. The only problem is that we have far too many screaming children with over indulgent parents in this country.1 I |
