1489537 2022-12-06 02:58:00 I notice that Maori names are added to govt departments.
Since when was it started?
Does it mean that English names will be phased out?

1489538 2022-12-06 03:08:00 They been doing it for years, but only recently have they amped up the speed of doing so.

Maybe its to confuse a high percentage of people who dont have a clue what the name means. ;)

1489539 2022-12-06 04:22:00 Everyone is doing it. St. John is now "Hato Hone, St. John." I contribute a yearly subs and contribute $25 whenever they have a special appeal, but got such a shock when I saw it on one of their letters a couple of weeks ago, I decided to give it a miss. Silly of me I know but that's the way it is!

1489542 2022-12-06 09:10:00 Bureaucrats have always tried to evade accountability. Since hardly anyone knows what these created Māori names purport to mean, when one, makes contact to report a problem or require action they can then use the excuse "nah, you must have got the wrong name -it's not us" Neil F (14248)
1489543 2022-12-06 17:39:00 Some people are making a lot of money out of the business of confusing most of the population with this type of crap, Don't expect it to stop even if we do get a change of government. CliveM (6007)

1489545 2022-12-06 18:22:00 I am one of those who knows nothing . . . can't even count from 1 to 10 in Maori . . .

And why would you need to or even want to? I can't see any reason to be able to count in maori . Of what use is that? No use at all . You'd be better off learning Mandarin, Cantonese or a European language . At least there are millions of people worldwide who speak those tongues . But who in the world speak maori? A few hundred in Sydney perhaps .

But what is wrong with English? We have done a modest amount of travelling, Europe in particular, and have never had any problem finding someone, France and Germany in particular, with whom we could speak English . It is the most widely spoken language in the world . Although we noticed that people in most countries were appreciative when you made the effort and knew a greeting at least . But maori? Most people had no idea where NZ was and in most cases had never even heard of NZ, let alone maori .

So I have absolutely no idea what all that mumbo jumbo included with the names of government departments means, I have no interest in what it means and could not care less . I just think that it is pointless . The vast majority of the population - including maori people - have no idea what it means . It is only the small minority that have any idea . And if the government want to waste their time and money getting someone to translate their name into maori, then I will not be voting for that lot next election .

But at least it is harmless if pointless . I just can't understand why they think it is something that is needed . NZ is an English speaking country so I fail to see why the labour government sees a need to force maori down our collective throats . I am just ignoring it . Next election I will be voting for anyone who is not labour . :groan:

I don't think that was their intention, but I'm sure the bureaucrats will be happy to take it!
