1488972 2022-10-20 04:51:00 My Epson XP 640 has decided it is not going to print for me. It printed OK yesterday. Today when I told it to print I am told the printer is in an "Error State" I clicked on the connection check it starts the check but only gets as far as 5%. It is connected by USB cable, normally to a rear port. I tried the front port - no joy, i had an old cable tried in front port, again no joy. I bought a new cable which doesn't work either. The printer has power, I have turned off both the computer and printer to no effect. Can anyone help? Brucem (8688)

1488974 2022-10-20 06:40:00 Printers have rightly won the most hated and problematic of all tech devices list.
I hate them.

Tonys brand new one has decided to whine he hadn't "registered and signed in" one day.
Could not get it to shut up. Started over with the hateful thing, no joy. FInally I got it to shut up, without any bizarre signing in or registering or whatever.

Mine has had a paper jam 3 times now.
Prick of a thing says clear rear and side.
Well rear was not the issue, and side? There is no side. You either get it from back or form under the print head.

Pig of a thing got itself caught under the roller and no way can get it like it's unhelpful diagram, ie gently pulling the paper forward, huh. I had to half take it apart.

Anyway all happy and it did it again this morning, of course, cause I was in a mad rush to go out, and really needed this bit of paper first.

Its no doubt due to do Error whatever it is, thats the printhead failed thing, happened to my last one and brothers last one.

What pisses me off the most is the cost of media vs number of pages from that media.....no matter if it is ink OR toner. Like my sons laser work gave him. Bugger all pages then a small fortune for another toner.
Nope. Ditched it and got a decent page per printer for him instead.

1488975 2022-10-20 20:39:00 Thanks Wainuitech, I have done almost all of the things listed. The only problem is when I try to restart the print spooler, the process gets to about 5% twice the stops and dissapears.

I agree entirely with your comment Piroska, I have long said that if anything goes wrong it will be the printer, beastly things.

1488976 2022-10-20 20:54:00 If the Print Spooler keeps stopping or the system is corrupted someplace then you need to fix that as well ( 1st)

One Article I found which explains how is softwarekeep.com ( Watch out for the popups, after closing them you can read the article.

The trouble shooters often give some sort of hints as to a problem.

You can also try opening acommand Prompt as Admin, run a system check, type in sfc /scannow

See if it finds any problems and fixes, you'll get one of 3 messages - no problem, problems found and repaired or problems found can't repair (other options after that if needed)

1488977 2022-10-20 23:28:00 Thanks again, this time your second website gave me a process that solved the problem. Could it have something to do with when I hover over the "show hidden icons" it showed 2 icons for the same printer, one was (and still is "Epson 1420D2 (XP-640 series) and the other was Epson XP-640 (I think) Brucem (8688)
1488978 2022-10-28 14:10:00 I have a laser printer from 1995. It works like a charm. The modern stuff is too complicated and low quality. Agent_24 (57)
1488979 2022-11-03 04:53:00 Thanks everyone, it is, or was cured, but today, i printed something without problems, the maybe 30 minutes later, beeped and said it had an error. It said to turn it off then on, then it said to refer to documentation 00031, after that it said the same but with 000025. that happened about 3 times, then it said clear paper jam. Seemed ok but printing brings back the 000025 error. where to from here? Brucem (8688)
1488980 2022-11-03 17:41:00 Maybe you have some scrap of paper stuck in the workings somewhere like Piroska did. Agent_24 (57)
1488981 2022-11-03 19:33:00 Could be a tiny piece of paper, had one a while back printer says paper jam, had to half strip the damn thing and found a tiny piece about 1mm Sq stuck to a sensor.

Looking at the code 000031 could also be the ink tank. www.freeprintersupport.com
